INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP

The Office of International Education invites international scholars and employees to meetings of an English Conversation group. (Spouses are also welcome!) The group meets for informal English conversation on the dates below. The meetings are a good place to practice English conversation and meet new people. Light refreshments will be provided.

All meetings will be held on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. in room 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue. No reservations are required. The group will meet on 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, and 11/10. Contact Sue Dollinger (dollinger.2@osu.edu) with any questions.

TRIP TO OHIO’S AMISH COUNTRY

Join OIE on a day-long tour of the uniquely American Amish country in nearby Holmes and Wayne Counties. The Amish came to the USA from Europe and live according to religious principles which distinguish their way of life from that of average Americans. They live simply, grow most of their own food, and make many items by hand. They do not use telephones or t.v. and they generally drive horses and buggies instead of cars.

Those interested in the trip should meet in front of Oxley Hall at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2004. Participants will return to Oxley hall at approximately 7:30 p.m. The cost of $30 (check or money order only) includes round-trip transportation, traditional Amish lunch, admission charges. Payment is due at the time of reservation, and there are no refunds. Reservations are required, and can be made at 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave.) Participants may wish to bring additional money to purchase Amish crafts and food specialties.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

OSU international scholars are invited to an American Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, September 21 from 2-4 p.m. Families are also welcome! There will be free ice cream and toppings, sundaes, and milkshakes. This is a great opportunity to meet new people from the United States and abroad. Come to OIE, first floor Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue, and follow the signs to the party. No reservation is required.

HALLOWEEN PARTY

OIE invites you to join us for a Halloween Party for visiting scholars and their families on Saturday, October 16, 2004 from 2-4 p.m. The party will be held at 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue. Refreshments will be provided, and there will be games and prizes for children and adults. Children are welcome! This is a great way for scholars (with or without families) to meet new people. Please e-mail Sue Dollinger (dollinger.2@osu.edu) by October 15 to let us know if you (and any family members) will be attending.

SOCCER GAME

OIE is offering reduced-rates ticket vouchers for the Columbus Crew soccer match against D.C. United at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. The Crew is Columbus’ professional soccer team, and the stadium is located north of OSU. Come and see D.C.’s 15-year-old soccer star, Freddy Adu, from Ghana. $12 ticket vouchers are available in room 100 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave. You can then exchange the voucher for a ticket at the game. For additional information and directions to the stadium, see www.thecrew.com.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR BLOG

In an effort to provide the most timely and accurate information to our international scholars, The Office of International Education at The Ohio State University has launched a new blog. This will complement our existing website and e-mail announcements and will enable us to communication information about immigration regulations and events the moment it is available. Go to http://oiescholar.blogspot.com. Check it often for the most up-to-date information from OIE.

PICNIC WITH THE BUCKEYES

You are invited to join OSU students, faculty, and staff at a picnic at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21. The Columbus Symphony Orchestra will play, and will include Buckeye tunes. The concert and picnic are free and will take place on the South Oval (at the corner of 12th Avenue and College Avenue.) Bring food and a blanket or chairs to sit on. Families are welcome!
