Born into Brothels Film Viewing and Dialogue

The most stigmatized people in Calcutta 's red light district are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother's fate or of creating another type of life. Zana Briski will speak about the creation of the film Born into Brothels depicting her work with the children of Calcutta 's red light district and their transformation through the art of photography following a screening of the film

EARTHQUAKE MESSAGE

The staff of the Office of International Education would like to
express our concern for international scholars and employees who may
have been affected by the recent tragic earthquake that occurred in
Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. Our sympathies go out to those who
may have lost family and friends. Anybody interested in helping the
victims of the earthquake can contact Kashif Khan, Coordinator, OSU

HALLOWEEN PARTY

OIE invites you to join us for a Halloween Party for international
scholars, employees, and their families on Saturday, October 29 from 2-4
p.m. The party will be held in room 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue.
Refreshments will be provided, and there will be games and prizes for
children and adults. Children are welcome!

This is a great way for scholars (with or without families) to meet new

INTERNATIONAL SPOUSES WELCOME EVENT

All spouses of OSU international scholars or employees are invited to a
meeting to learn about: things to do in Columbus, safety, health care,
English classes, volunteering opportunities, children's activities,
and other information. New international spouses will be able to hear
from spouses already familiar with Columbus, as well as to meet other
spouses. Spouses who have already spent time in Columbus are invited to
come welcome the new spouses and learn about additional opportunities.

The event will be held on Friday, October 28th from 9 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. in the lower level of University Baptist Church, 50 West Lane
Avenue. (This location is close to High street on the northern edge of
Ohio State University.) Free childcare and children's activities will
be provided. Both male and female spouses, and those of all English
levels are invited.

COLUMBUS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The Columbus Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA is
sponsoring an international festival on November 4, 5, and 6 at Veterans
Memorial, 200 W. Broad Street. The festival will include food, crafts,
gifts, and music from many countries. The festival is open from 6-10 PM
on November 4, from 10 AM to 10 PM on November 5, and from 11 AM to 6 PM
on November 6. Admission is $7 adults, $5 students and senior citizens,
$2 for ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under.

FILM: "THE WORLD"

OIE and the OSU Wexner Center for the Arts are co-sponsoring a film and
reception in honor of International Education Week. The Chinese film,
"The World," will be shown at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 18 in
the Wexner Center Film/Video Theatre. (1871 North High Street.) A free
reception and discussion will follow. All international scholars,
employees, and spouses are invited to attend. Tickets are $6 at the
door. A limited number of free tickets will be available at OIE (room
100 Oxley Hall) starting in November.

The film has English subtitles and touches on universal issues ranging
from globalization to digital isolation, with humor and compassion.
Chinese director Jia Zhangke has been called "the world's greatest
film maker under forty." The film gives a look into the lives of
young people in their twenties who come to live and work at Beijing's
World Park - which features displays and performances from the countries
of the world.

Mark your calendars for the following events:

Thursday, November 24: OSU Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Campus (1-3 PM
in the Ohio Union Ballrooms.) This event is free to OSU students,
scholars, employees, families, and friends. Tickets are required and
can be picked up at OIE in room 100 Oxley Hall starting November 14,
2005. More information will follow.

December 31: International New Year's Eve Party - "Times Square at
the Ohio Union." The party will be held from 9PM to 1AM in the Ohio
Union Ballrooms. The event is free and open to OSU students, scholars,

International Scholar Research Exposition
Call for submission of abstracts DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 10/27/2005!

The Ohio State University Office of International Education (OIE) will
host the First Annual International Scholar Research Exposition from
November 14 - December 30, 2005. This six week exposition, which will be
housed in Bricker Hall (location of the office of the president), will
showcase in poster format, the world-class research being undertaken by
J-1 scholars like you. At a time when OSU is garnering much attention
because of its prestigious climb to the top 10 public research
universities in the U.S., it is important that we show some of the
research that has contributed to this ascent in ranking. Furthermore, it
is intended to raise awareness of the outstanding contributions
international scholars are making not only to our community but also to
advancing the cause of humanity world-wide.

There will be an opening reception on Wednesday December 7, 2005 where
participating scholars can meet, greet, and discuss their research with
President Karen Holbrook, university administrators, faculty, and
colleagues.

OIE invites all J-1 scholars engaged in research to submit an abstract
detailing their research. Abstracts will be accepted until 5:00pm on
Thursday, October 27, 2005. Email submissions should be sent with the
subject heading OIE INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR EXPO-Abstract to:
ako-adounvo.1@osu.edu.

Abstracts must conform to the guidelines listed below.

* All authors and co-authors must agree to the submission.
* A 100 word biography of the presenting author naming the country of
origin must be included
* Abstracts must be submitted in Word for Windows format.
* Must be written in English
* 14 point for title, 12 point for text in Times New Roman
* All margins should be 1 inch, left and right justified
* Abstracts should be 500 words or less
* Description of the issue or problem addressed
* Purpose/rationale
* Implications
* Name of Author
* Name of co-authors if applicable

This exposition which will feature up to 25 entries, is intended to be
inclusive rather than competitive. The intention is to showcase research
from as wide a range of disciplines as possible, being carried out by

abstracts and author biographies will be published in the Exposition
program brochure.

Announcing.....the International Spouses' Welcome Event!!!!!!

What Is this Special Event? An opportunity to learn about some of the following areas: Things to Do in Columbus, Safety, Healthcare, English Classes, Volunteering Opportunities, Children’s Activities, and much more! International spouses already familiar with Columbus will be sharing their experiences, and all international spouses will have a chance to connect with other spouses. You may meet some new friends!

Who Is Invited? ALL international spouses at OSU are invited. This includes spouses of international students and spouses of international scholars, both male and female spouses. Spouses with all levels of English are welcome to come.

Important Note: This program is designed for newly-arrived international spouses, but is open to ALL spouses. We encourage international spouses who have already been in Columbus for some time to come. We hope you will come help welcome the new international spouses and share what you have learned about living in Columbus.

What about Children? You can bring your children! FREE childcare will be provided at this event. If you have children who are not yet in school, please bring them with you. They will be entertained in a playroom which is part of the larger room where we will be meeting.

When Is this Special Event? The event will be on Friday, October 28th. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m.

Where Is This Welcome Event? We will be meeting in the basement of University Baptist Church. (Note: This church has been kind enough to open their space to us, but this is not a religious event). University Baptist Church is located at 50 West Lane Avenue. This is on the edge of campus, across the street from the OSU dormitory Taylor Tower. (This is because that space is not OSU-owned property). University Baptist Church is on West Lane Avenue, next to the Catholic Newman Center. There is a sign on University Baptist Church facing West Lane Avenue, BUT PLEASE GO AROUND THE BUILDING AND ENTER FROM THE PARKING LOT SIDE. There will be signs directing you downstairs to the basement meeting hall.

How Do I Get to the Event? University Baptist Church is near the corner of West Lane Avenue and North High Street. The closest COTA bus stops would be Norwich and North High Street (west side of High Street) and Northwood and North High Street (east side of High Street). You could also call COTA at 292-6122 for directions from your home.

If you are driving, there will be FREE parking. Please note that parking is behind the church. You would need to turn off of North High Street, onto West Norwich Avenue (a one-way street, west-bound). On the corner of North High Street and West Lane Avenue, you will see a CVS Pharmacy. Across from CVS is Lee’s Market. West Norwich Avenue is next to Lee’s Market. The church is behind Lee’s Market. The parking entrance is at 31 West Norwich Avenue. You will see a big house in the front, and a red-brick building behind it. This is University Baptist Church. The phone number of the church is 294-6333. Please park only in the lined spaces at the University Baptist Church. If the parking lot becomes full, please come in the church for directions for additional parking.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP

It's not too late for you to join the OIE International Scholars
English Conversation Group which meets from 12-1 on Wednesdays in room
122 Oxley Hall. Refreshments will be provided. This is an opportunity
to meet new people and have informal, English conversation. No cost or
registration required. The group will meet on 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, and

DIVERSITY (GREEN CARD) LOTTERY PROGRAM

Each year, the United States administers a program in which up to
50,000 immigrant visas (green cards) are made available in a lottery
system to foreign nationals of countries which have historically been
under-represented in the United States. This year's application
period will be from October 5, 2005 - December 4, 2005. For more

Oct. 10th Spaghetti Dinner to Benefit Hurricane Katrina Victims

A campus-wide spaghetti dinner on Monday evening, Oct. 10th, will raise funds to help OSU students affected by Hurricane Katrina, as well as provide support to food banks in areas serving large numbers of evacuees.

Sponsored by the three student governments (USG, CGS and IPC) and the Greek Councils, the dinner will include spaghetti with a choice of meat or marinara sauce, tossed salad, garlic bread, dessert, and a beverage. Cost is $7 per person or a “swipe” on the student dining plan. Guests may donate more if they choose.

Students living in residence halls may use their meal plans to participate in the dinners during the regular evening meal hours at Baker Buckeye Express, Kennedy, Morrill and North Commons. The university will donate the cost of their swipe to the project.

Other students, faculty, staff and community members can dine in at the Ohio Union ballrooms at either 5:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. seatings. Pre-sale tickets are encouraged for these and tickets are on sale now at the Ohio Union Information Center. Carryout orders will also be available at the Ohio Union, from 5 to 8 p.m. A drive-thru will be set up on Union Drive on the east side of the Ohio Union for carryout orders. Those wishing to use the drive-thru should access Union Drive from 12th Ave.
