EARTHQUAKE MESSAGE

The staff of the Office of International Education would like to
express our concern for international scholars and employees who may
have been affected by the recent tragic earthquake that occurred in
Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan. Our sympathies go out to those who
may have lost family and friends. Anybody interested in helping the
victims of the earthquake can contact Kashif Khan, Coordinator, OSU
Asian American Student Services. (khan.162@osu.edu or 688-8449)

HALLOWEEN PARTY

OIE invites you to join us for a Halloween Party for international
scholars, employees, and their families on Saturday, October 29 from 2-4
p.m. The party will be held in room 122 Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Avenue.
Refreshments will be provided, and there will be games and prizes for
children and adults. Children are welcome!

This is a great way for scholars (with or without families) to meet new
people. PLEASE E-MAIL SUE DOLLINGER (dollinger.2@osu.edu) BY OCTOBER 28
to let us know if you (and any family members) will be attending.

INTERNATIONAL SPOUSES WELCOME EVENT

All spouses of OSU international scholars or employees are invited to a
meeting to learn about: things to do in Columbus, safety, health care,
English classes, volunteering opportunities, children's activities,
and other information. New international spouses will be able to hear
from spouses already familiar with Columbus, as well as to meet other
spouses. Spouses who have already spent time in Columbus are invited to
come welcome the new spouses and learn about additional opportunities.

The event will be held on Friday, October 28th from 9 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. in the lower level of University Baptist Church, 50 West Lane
Avenue. (This location is close to High street on the northern edge of
Ohio State University.) Free childcare and children's activities will
be provided. Both male and female spouses, and those of all English
levels are invited.

TO RECEIVE AN INVITATION AND FURTHER DETAILS OF THE EVENT, CONTACT
MARLENE PERRINE AT perrine.195 @osu.edu.

COLUMBUS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The Columbus Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA is
sponsoring an international festival on November 4, 5, and 6 at Veterans
Memorial, 200 W. Broad Street. The festival will include food, crafts,
gifts, and music from many countries. The festival is open from 6-10 PM
on November 4, from 10 AM to 10 PM on November 5, and from 11 AM to 6 PM
on November 6. Admission is $7 adults, $5 students and senior citizens,
$2 for ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under.

FILM: "THE WORLD"

OIE and the OSU Wexner Center for the Arts are co-sponsoring a film and
reception in honor of International Education Week. The Chinese film,
"The World," will be shown at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 18 in
the Wexner Center Film/Video Theatre. (1871 North High Street.) A free
reception and discussion will follow. All international scholars,
employees, and spouses are invited to attend. Tickets are $6 at the
door. A limited number of free tickets will be available at OIE (room
100 Oxley Hall) starting in November.

The film has English subtitles and touches on universal issues ranging
from globalization to digital isolation, with humor and compassion.
Chinese director Jia Zhangke has been called "the world's greatest
film maker under forty." The film gives a look into the lives of
young people in their twenties who come to live and work at Beijing's
World Park - which features displays and performances from the countries
of the world.
