WINTER SURVIVAL

Anybody from a warm climate has some adjusting to do when facing the cold temperatures, ice, and snow of winters in Columbus. Here are some suggestions to help cope with the challenges:

Clothing: Wear a hat, gloves, and warm socks and shoes, since most body temperature is lost through the head, hands, and feet. Wear a scarf around your neck and mouth to avoid breathing cold air. Layer your clothing - turtle neck shirts under sweaters, long stockings or long underwear under jeans.

Keeping warm at home: Instead of turning the heat temperature higher, put on more clothing. Have warm blankets on the bed and turn the temperature lower when you are sleeping. Keep the temperature lower in the day when you are not home - but not lower than 60, to keep the pipes from freezing. If cold air is coming in cracks by the windows or doors, cover the cracks with cloth, tape, or caulk. Cover the windows with plastic for extra warmth. If you are renting, your landlord is required by law to make sure there is heat in your apartment.

Driving: Always wear a coat, hat, and gloves when driving in case your car breaks down and you need to be outside in the cold. Keep a good ice scraper and brush to clean the ice and snow from your car windows and lights. When roads are slippery, drive slowly since it takes much longer to stop when the road is slippery. Do not stop suddenly.
Health: Drink lots of water and put lotion on your hands and face to counteract the drying effects of indoor heat. Wash your hands frequently to avoid colds and flu which is spread more easily during the winter months indoors.
